Here on Cape Cod the daffodils are finally popping open their bright yellow bonnets for us all to enjoy. I have had a busy winter painting my Cape Cod seascapes and landscapes. It feels like coming out of a long hibernation.

It was a long, cold snowy winter, but in my studio I spent the winter looking at photos of warm beach days, grass lined beach paths and calm blue seas. One of the things I try to get across in my work is the feeling of being right there. As I put my brush strokes on the canvas, I go back in time and mentally experience the sights, sounds, smells and feel of whatever the conditions I am painting, whether that be sun or fog. So despite the snow flying outside I was right back on a July day on Millway beach or watching the fog lift at Sandy Neck.

Not a bad way to spend the winter.

My Cape Cod seascape and landscape oil paintings exhibit

Thanks to all who came to the reception last night for my exhibit of Cape Cod seascapes and landscapes at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod in South Yarmouth. My framed oil paintings will be there through Sunday, May 6.

If you've never been to the center, and find yourself on Cape Cod looking for something to do, be sure to stop by. The center does a remarkable job of featuring a range of artistic and cultural events, exhibits, classes, and workshops all year 'round.

For example, tonight the George Gritzbach R&B Band performs, tomorrow afternoon is a spring music festival by Cape and Islands music teachers and students, Table Française (for lovers of all things French) meets on Wednesday, and the Grapevine Wine Club meets May 7.

There's always an art exhibit in the main room as well as three side rooms. My exhibit is in the boardroom, immediately to the left as you come in the front door. You can find a list of all uncoming events and exhibits on the center's calendar page on its website.

The center is a wonderful resource for Cape Cod, and a great place to visit to capture a piece of the artistic and cultural scene of the Cape. The address and phone number is:

The gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

By the way, I'll be in another exhibit at the center in June: the Northside Painters of Cape Cod, of which I'm a member, is having a joint exhibit in the main room with the South Cape Artists. It's called "North Meets South" and should be a lor of fun. It will be open daily from Wednesday, June 13 through Sunday, June 24.

New paintings, new ideas

To an artist, winter on Cape Cod means time - time to spend valuable hours painting in my studio.

One benefit of this time is the freedom to try some new techniques. I've always been a fan of wet-into-wet painting, and I still am spending plenty of time doing that. I still find wet-into-wet very rewarding. I love the buttery feel of the oil paint and the blending ability of wet, juicy paint.

But this winter, I am exploring other techniques and practicing patience. Several pieces I am working on are being developed over multiple painting sessions. There are several things I like about this approach:

You can paint over areas to color-correct without the paint becoming too muddy.
As the painting develops, I can change the direction in which I take the painting.
Last, but definitely not least, I can use glazes. Transparent glazes can have beautiful effects, and are so much fun to use because if I don't like the way it looks, I can wipe it right off!

New Cape Cod seascape paintings

After a very busy summer and fall, full of shows and exhibits, I'm happy to say that I have updated this site to display 11 new pieces of art depicting Cape Cod seascapes, marshes, and shores.

From foggy flats on the north side of the Cape to appealing dune paths beckoning to the soft beach on the other side, I've tried to capture the essence of life on Cape Cod.
